A Different World

Summary and Analysis:

First hearing the words 'Freshman Seminar', I figured the class was obviously a class required for all incoming freshman at Howard University. I thought the class would surely get my fellow classmates and myself ready for the remaining four years of attending HU! My expectations were those of a class much like College Success, but as soon as I was informed of the seven lectures, the conclusion was made that I was indeed wrong. I was shocked, yet relieved. Shocked because the class was not at all what I had in mind, and relieved because each lecture title increased my interest of the class, being because I believe the history of Howard should be instilled in every student whom attends. I am interested in every lecture really because they all, I’m sure, will only help me in the future. I think that Freshman Seminar's goals and objectives will help me toward my academic goals because the lectures will motivate me to succeed such as other students/doctors/entrepreneurs/business owner/ etc. who has gotten their education also from HU.

Reflection:

Coming into Howard on my first day, I didn't really have much expectations because I did not know what to look forward to, I just knew it would be a different world. Being the Floridian that I am, I knew I would endure some type of culture shock my first week, not knowing a real shock, the Earthquake, would literally be my culture shock. In Florida, we do NOT have Earthquakes. Therefore, I have never experienced one. I must admit, I was a bit frightened because I had no idea what had just happened. Making it all the worse, it woke me out of my sleep and I am not happy being woken out of my sleep.
Besides this event, other things in D.C swept me off my feet and maybe not in a good way. The chicken nuggets here are a whole $3.49 whereas in Florida they are $1.99. That has been the most upsetting thing that I have encountered here my first week. Everything in Washington, D.C is a lot more expensive than in Florida and that is something that will be very hard to get used to.
Getting off topic from the things I do not like about D.C, there are many things that I do like here. Campus life is great. I am so far away from home but I feel at home in my dorm, the Harriet Tubman Quadrangles. The girls on my floor are amazing and I can get used to coming home and talking to them.
College after the first week I think will be just fine. In high school, I was dual enrolled at the local Community College. I am already ahead 20 credit hours so I kind of have an idea of what college will be after the first week. As time goes by, I know that my classes may become more difficult, but with determination and self motivation, I know that I will pull through fine. I am looking forward to the challenges, I like challenges.
"Here's a chance to make it, If we focus on our goals. If you dish it we can take it, Just remember you've been told It's a different world form where you come from." -A Different World theme song
